Anaesthesia: Improvement through Partnership

This two year collaborative project between National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) and Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) aims to improve patient safety through working directly with clinicians.

The three priority areas that have been agreed are:

  • Investigating two methods of double checking anaesthetic drugs given by injection

  • Evaluating the effectiveness of direct communication through professional networks.  A known patient safety issue (retained throat packs) will be used in the evaluation.

Anaesthesia Event

The Royal College of Anaesthetists is holding an Anaesthesia Safety Conference on 12 January 2009. This event will have a specific focus on the National Audit Project(s) and national anaesthesia patient safety initiatives, which are underway in conjunction with the NPSA.
