Following the recent decision by the funding stakeholders* to discontinue the procurement process for the Maternal and Newborn Clinical Outcome Review, it is vital that over the next few months we maintain a comprehensive and robust process for preserving the integrity of maternal and perinatal data associated with the Review.
The National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) has already contacted the data collectors across the United Kingdom to inform them of the changes. Further information and support is being provided by the NPSA to assist the data collectors on how to manage the data collection process during this period, and details of the revised data requirements and arrangements for submission of data collections will be issued shortly.
Given the importance of this work, we are also delighted to confirm that the previously announced review panel for maternal and newborn will be chaired by Dr Sheila Shribman, National Clinical Director for Children, Young People and Maternity Services, Department of Health.
The names of the individuals to make up the full panel are now being confirmed and will be announced shortly, and will include representation from the devolved administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales as well as experts from midwifery, obstetrics, gynaecology and epidemiology.
Detailed terms of reference for the review panel are now being drafted by the NPSA. The panel is expected to complete its review and make recommendations for the future management of the maternal and newborn work by the end of July 2011.
