Publicity ideas

We have put together a list of activities you may want to draw on to achieve your objectives for the campaign in the coming year. Some may not be appropriate for all care settings.


Senior management – keep them informed and active

  • Present the next stage of the campaign in your trust- the proposed objectives and intended outcomes. Explain why it is important for the trust to participate in the campaign (see example slides) and get official endorsement.
  • Keep them updated on the progress of the campaign, showing how you have delivered on your targets (slides).
  • Get them to act as role models/champions for the campaign and speak publicly on the importance of hand hygiene across the trust (for e.g. via your internal newsletter, or at events).
  • Get key staff to send an email or letter to the staff, post an item on notice boards to promote the campaign
  • Invite and involve them in all activities you plan for the campaign
  • Arrange for your local press to visit for a press briefing and review what is being done in your trust around hand hygiene. You could feature local staff such as nurses, allied health professionals or medical staff, but you should first get approval from senior management.
  • Feed into any partnership working with other local NHS trusts, strategic health authorities and local authorities on hand hygiene/infection control issues or local events and initiatives.  

 

Middle management – consult, involve, engage

  • Ensure your steering committee is active and has representation from all staff groups and key departments.
  • Discuss your plans for the campaign and get feedback from the department heads on how it will impact on their teams and solicit suggestions for the best way forward within their department.
  • Keep individual managers and leads informed about his/her department’s progress via e-mail.
  • Get them to act as role models/champions for the campaign.
  • Produce local case studies to help guide departments, sites or individual efforts. Include questions on hand hygiene in patient and staff surveys and publish the results
  • Highlight key milestones or achievements such as audit results or positive changes to facilities with a small gift, such as a promotional item, a press release or congratulatory email from DIPC etc

Frontline staff - consult, engage, prompt, support, reinforce, praise

Gain commitment

  • Research has shown that if someone actively commits to an activity, they are more likely to follow through. Get staff to sign a commitment form via your induction or training packs or do a public commitment (on board/wall) at key events. 
  • Support and recognise efforts at good hand hygiene
  • Seek out those interested in being champions (from a wide range of staff groups) and recognise them with photos. You can do this using the champion poster or your own notice boards, photo frames or locally designed posters.
  • Hold an award ceremony to recognise achievements in infection control or hand hygiene within your trust
  • Create an official acknowledgement (such as a certificate) to mark good practice areas across the trust.
  • Create a suggestion box for staff to give ideas or flag up areas of concern
  • Organise regular meetings for your link personnel to keep them motivated and engaged and to encourage support and learning
  • Conduct a periodic staff survey to see how you can assist them in making hand hygiene easier.
  • Link into wider activities, such as the WHO’s Global hand hygiene initiative on the 5th May or national infection control week.

Make it fun, inclusive and easy for them to access information

  • Take the information to your trust’s sites as part of a roadshow. Work with link personnel or department heads to identify a suitable moment to meet with teams and talk to them about hand hygiene. You can use the leaflets and credit card flyers to help with this.
  • Plan a trust wide study day on hand hygiene for your champions and link personnel.
  • Provide a hand hygiene telephone hotline or email inbox for staff to contact for information on hand hygiene.
  • Hold a poster competition for your staff. Get them to design their own poster and then print the winners
  • Set up a quiz for different departments which can be used to help determine knowledge of hand hygiene and offer a prize.
  • Get your trust’s radio station to broadcast information on the campaign and your trust's work around hand hygiene. This could include interviews with staff and campaign leads.
  • Create a regular column in staff newsletters providing little tips and facts on hand hygiene
  • Use payslip attachments such as the staff leaflets to help promote the campaign within your trust
  • Use inserts in case notes with information on hand hygiene to help remind staff. You could also try printing information on hand hygiene on the inside cover of the case notes as a reminder for staff. 
  • Use the campaign screensavers (available for England and Wales) across your trust
  • Introduce hand hygiene into induction training
  • Hold presentations at lunch times to help promote the campaign
  • Use promotional items such as mugs, fob watches etc to help promote the campaign messages
  • Create an agar plate with colonization of microorganisms from staff hands and show a comparison with a similar dish on which alcohol handrub has been used.

Patient Involvement

  •  Use a mascot to help promote the ‘it’s ok to ask’ aspect of the campaign to  patients/service users to ensure they are comfortable asking staff.
  • Work with PALS/LINks and other local patient action groups to promote the ‘it’s ok to ask’ element of the campaign
  • Post information on the campaign on your intranet or trust website. (Your communications team can assist with this)

Encourage hand hygiene at point of care

  • Ensure alcohol handrub dispensers (wall mounted or personal) are easy to access by staff. Ensure there are adequate supplies
  • Ensure prompts are put up where relevant
